IAOM trained orofacial myofunctional therapist (graduate of ORPP and Myomentor)
Myofuctional therapy is within an RDH's scope of practice, and it historically has been included in some dental hygiene educational programs. There is mounting research connecting improper oral facial function (ie. mouth breathing) to broader health issues. For example, mouth breathing in children has been shown to contribute to difficulties sleeping and symptoms of Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Mouth breathing in adults has been connected to sleep apnea. Therefore, the goals of myofunctional therapy are proper oral rest posture and restoration of normal function, which includes:
- nose breathing
- closed lips (correct lip seal)
- proper tongue positioning
- proper swallowing
It most often involves a multidisciplinary approach.
